Benefits of Breast Augmentation
The decision to have breast enlargement is a very personal one and the most frequent factors in this decision are:
- to restore volume after pregnancy and breastfeeding
- to enhance breast volume and contour
- to correct for size differences
- in reconstruction following mastectomy
Breast enlargement can enhance a woman’s appearance and self-confidence, in addition to making the selection of clothing easier as a result of a more balanced and desirable shape. Women of all ages find the breast enlargement procedure to be a most rewarding and beneficial experience. This procedure should not affect a woman’s ability to breastfeed.
What Happens During a Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation involves placing an incision in one of several locations on the breast (areolar, inframammary or axillary), with the inframammary incision being the most commonly selected by patients. Either the breast or the breast and pectoralis muscle are then elevated off the chest wall to create a space where the implant will be placed. The actual implant placement will depend on several factors including the patient’s anatomy, desires and the type of implant chosen.
What are My Breast Implant Options?
The implants available today for breast enlargement are either saline-filled or silicone gel-filled. There are distinct advantages to each of these implants that will be discussed in detail at your consultation with a recommendation being made based on the findings of your exam.
The implants are not forever devices, and it is possible they could fail with time. Currently the manufacturers offer lifetime replacement of the implant in the event of a failure and in addition, offer financial assistance to help offset the expense of replacement if the device fails within ten years.
There are risks involved with any surgical procedure, and the specific risks and restrictions after surgery will be discussed in detail at your consultation. Before undergoing any surgery, it is recommended patients avoid smoking and any medications (aspirin, Vitamin E, etc.) that may affect bleeding.
What is the Downtime After Breast Augmentation?
There are physical restrictions immediately following surgery, with patients usually able to return to full physical activity within three weeks.
