Dermal Fillers and Injectables in Jacksonville, FL
As we age, our faces begin to show the effects of gravity, sun exposure and years of facial muscle movement, such as smiling, chewing and squinting. The underlying tissues that keep our skin looking youthful and plumped up begin to break down, often leaving laugh lines, smile lines, crow’s feet or facial creases over the areas where this muscle movement occurs. OBI BioAesthetic Institute and Jacksonville Plastic Surgery offer dermal fillers and injectables for men and women in Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach, Ponte Vedra Beach and surrounding areas of Florida.
What are Dermal Fillers and Injectables?
Soft-tissue fillers can help fill in these lines and creases, temporarily restoring a smoother, more youthful-looking appearance. When injected beneath the skin, these fillers plump up creased and sunken areas of the face. They can also add fullness to the lips and cheeks. Injectable fillers may be used alone or in conjunction with other non-invasive procedures.
At OBI BioAesthetic Institute and Jacksonville Plastic Surgery we offer the following dermal fillers and injectables:
- Juvéderm® Ultra XC
- Restylane® Refyne™
- Revanesse® Versa™
- Lip Injections
- Liquid Facelift
Benefits of Dermal Fillers and Injectables
Dermal fillers and injectables are primarily used to restore volume in areas of volume loss and to soften creases and folds. They can help fill in and soften deep facial wrinkles, creases and furrows, “sunken” cheeks, skin depressions and some types of scars. They can also be used to create more full, plump lips.
- Restore lost volume
- Decrease appearance of wrinkles, lines and creases
- “Plump” lips
- Reduce the appearance of certain scars
What Can I Expect from My Facial Fillers Consultation?
Facial rejuvenation is very individualized, which is why it’s important to discuss your expectations with our team members. In your initial consultation, we will evaluate your face – the skin, muscles and underlying bone – and discuss your goals and expectations. We will also ask about your medical history, drug allergies, and check for conditions that could cause problems, such as active skin infections or non-healed sores from injuries.
Who is the Ideal Candidate for Facial Fillers?
Facial injections are ideal for men and women who have mild to moderate lines, volume loss, wrinkles and folds on their face. Dermal fillers and injectables are sometimes an appropriate alternative to invasive facial surgery. Your advanced practice provider may suggest a resurfacing technique, such as chemical peel or dermabrasion treatments.
Deep folds in the face or brow caused by overactive muscles or loose skin may be more effectively treated with cosmetic surgery, such as a facelift or browlift. Injectables are sometimes used in conjunction with facial surgery procedures; however, injectables alone cannot change facial contour the way surgery can.
If you are pregnant, allergic to beef or bovine products, suffer from autoimmune diseases, or allergic to lidocaine (the anesthetic agent contained in the syringe with the collagen material) you may not be eligible for dermal fillers and injectables. Please notify your advanced practice provider to find out what, if anything may keep you from being a candidate for dermal fillers and injectables.
Is Anesthesia Required for Injectables?
No, typically an anesthetic is not necessary for dermal fillers and injectables. If you are concerned about pain, be sure to share this with your advanced service provider. The majority of our patients find facial injections to be a comfortable experience.
Can a Cannula Be Used to Administer Dermal Fillers and Injections?
Dermal fillers and injectables are most commonly administered using needles. For some patients administering the product with a cannula is more comfortable and leads to less bruising and swelling. A cannula is blunt-tipped and glides through tissue. During your complimentary aesthetic consultation we can discuss if administration via needle or cannula is ideal for you.
What Happens During an Injectable Appointment?
The dermal filler is injected using a fine needle inserted at several points along the edge of the treatment site. If a local anesthesia has not been used, you may feel some minor stinging or burning as the injections are administered.
What is the Downtime for Facial Fillers?
Immediately following treatment, you may notice some minor discomfort, stinging or throbbing in the injected area. Occasionally some bruising or swelling will occur, but it is usually minor. Any redness that appears in the injected site usually disappears within 24 hours. However, in some individuals, particularly fair-skinned patients, this redness may persist for a week or more.
No bandaging is needed and you are free to eat and drink immediately after. Makeup and skin health products can be applied shortly thereafter. There may be some temporary swelling and redness in the treated area which should dissipate within a few days. If these symptoms persist, contact your advanced practice provider.
What are the Risks of Dermal Fillers and Injectables?
When injectables are administered by a qualified healthcare provider, complications are infrequent and usually minor in nature. Still, individuals vary greatly in their anatomy, their physical reactions and their healing abilities. The outcome of treatment with injectables is never completely predictable.
An allergic reaction is the primary risk associated with dermal fillers and injectables. However, allergic reactions are rare. If you experience severe redness, itching, or swelling after treatment, consult with your advanced practice provider.
What Results Are Expected from Facial Fillers?
The length of time you can expect to see results varies from person to person as it is based on the patient’s lifestyle and physical characteristics as well as the part of the face that is treated and the product used. During your complimentary aesthetic consultation, our advanced practice providers will help determine how long you can go between treatments to best maintain your results.
