Otoplasty (Ear Surgery) in Jacksonville, FL

Ears that stand out can distract people from your other features and may even make you the target of teasing. Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. John Obi, can help with otoplasty. Ear surgery can be performed on children and adults in Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach, Ponte Vedra Beach, Atlantic Beach and surrounding areas of Florida, to give the ears a more balanced shape and size.

What is Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)?

Otoplasty, referred to as ear reshaping or ear pinning, is performed at Jacksonville Plastic Surgery by Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. John Obi. The ear reshaping procedure is performed at our on on-site surgical facility on an outpatient basis. It’s done under local anesthesia with sedation and is usually completed in 2 to 3 hours. Jacksonville Plastic Surgery Center is an accredited ambulatory surgery center.

What are the Benefits of Ear Surgery?

The decision to have ear pinning surgery is a very personal one and some of the most common benefits include:

  • Reducing the size of large ears
  • Setting prominent ears closer to the head
  • Improving earlobe size and shape
  • Correcting ear shape problems
  • Avoiding the teasing or ridiculing of children with protruding ears
  • Constructing new ears to correct a birth condition or injury

Ear reshaping surgery can enhance your appearance and self-confidence, in addition to giving your face a more balanced and pleasing shape. Children who undergo the surgery may feel more secure about their ears and more comfortable with their peers. Otoplasty can be done alone or in conjunction with other facial surgery procedures such as rhinoplasty. Most people find the ear pinning procedure to be a very rewarding and beneficial experience.

What Happens During Ear Surgery?

Otoplasty usually involves a small incision in the back of the ear to expose the ear cartilage. The cartilage is then weakened by scoring it and bent back toward the head. Non-removable stitches are then used to help maintain the new shape. Occasionally, a piece of cartilage is removed to provide a more natural-looking fold when the surgery is complete.

Another technique involves a similar incision in the back of the ear. Skin is removed and stitches are used to fold the cartilage back on itself to reshape the ear.

There are risks involved with any surgical procedure and the specific risks and restrictions after surgery will be discussed in detail at your consultation with Dr. John Obi. Before the surgery, patients are advised to avoid smoking and taking any medications (aspirin, Vitamin E, etc.) that may affect bleeding.

What is the Downtime After Otoplasty?

There are physical restrictions immediately following the surgery, which will be discussed with you during your consultation and again post-op. Typically patients are able to return to work or school within a week.
